Did Washington DC's Football Team Change Its Name To 'Redhawks'?

How a Group of Native American Activists Used Fake News to Push for a Redskins Name Change LOOK: Elaborate hoax has hit the internet saying Redskins are changing their name

This website was created by Native advocates to help us all imagine how easy and powerful changing the mascot could be. The fabrications used headlines such "Washington Redskins to Change Name to Washington Redhawks".

Washingtonians were almost fooled by an "elaborate hoax" conducted by a Native American rights group saying the Washington Redskins had been renamed.

Apparently, a group of native american activists made a decision to send social media in a rave after they created fake web sites designed to look like the Washington Post, ESPN, Bleacher Report, and Sports Illustrated and published real looking articles about the Washington Redskins changing their name to the Redhawks.

The group created fake pages for the websites of the Washington Post, Bleacher Report, ESPN and Sports Illustrated, taking great pains to make them look like real pages for each outlet, and many people were convinced the news was real. The sites locked nearly identical save the URL, which though similar was incorrect to reveal the hoax.

"The hawk was chosen to represent the strength, speed, and courage of the Washington Redhawks' players", a faux announcement on the hoax website read.

"This morning, the Redskins organization was made aware of fraudulent websites about our team name", a statement from the Redskins said Wednesday, per the real ESPN.

In the first three hours of the #GoRedhawks campaign, social media exploded the with the hoax, with The Washington Times and USA Today calling it out.

Washpostsports eventually posted a disclaimer at the top of the article, saying the website is a "parody" that wasn't endorsed by the Washington Post. Washington Football has always been about our loyal fans, who have rooted us on for 85 years.

But the story was in fact a very real example of the Fake News Media at work. "A tweet from the "@redhawksdc" said "The Washington Football team is proud to announce a new mascot!

A native activist group, Rising Hearts, was behind the hoax, according to the press release.

"What we're asking for changes only four letters".

The activists behind the online action, Rising Hearts, are hosting an in-person press conference in Washington DC this Thursday December 14th at 2PM at the George Preston Marshall Monument in front of RFK Stadium.
