York becomes third United Kingdom city to ban Uber

York is the Third UK City to Refuse Uber a New Licence BREAKING: Uber has UK ban LIFTED in huge boost for taxi app

UBER has been banned in a third United Kingdom city.

Unlike London, which deemed Uber wasn't "fit and proper" to operate within the city, York council's licensing team found that "there is no evidence before your officers that indicates the applicant is not fit and proper to hold an operator's licence in York".

The decision was said to have followed productive discussions between Uber and Sheffield City Council.

Uber is appealing against September's decision by regulator Transport for London to strip it of its licence in its most important European market.

Uber's licence was due to expire in York on Christmas Eve this year, having twice previously been granted clearance to operate - most recently on December 21 2016.

York has become the third United Kingdom city to refuse Uber a licence to operate, citing concerns about the ride-hailing company's 2016 data breach, which affected 2.7m British users and drivers, and customer complaints.

In a statement, the council said Uber had since replied to the questions it had been asked.

"This is a disappointing vote for the riders and drivers who use our app in the city".

"I believe that increased choice and competition is a good thing for both passengers and drivers in terms of increasing standards across the board". Passengers tell us they love being able to track their vehicle on a live map, pay without cash and get a receipt with their fare and the route taken.

He added the company had been "open and cooperative" with the council in tackling issues, including where drivers have applied for hire illegally.

The company has 21 days to lodge an appeal and can continue to operate in the city if it does so.

Uber's appeal against TfL's decision not to renew its licence will be heard in the spring.

It took the action last month after the company failed to respond to its requests.
