Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg is claiming that Apple is developing an advanced heart-monitor for its next generation Apple Watch, as part of the company's plans to turn its smartwatch into a serious medical device.

According to Bloomberg, one way Apple could implement an EKG is by having users hold the sides of the Watch, which would then send a weak electrical current to their heart. It could become a credible medical device that could alert users to take preventative measures in heart health.

EKG, or electrocardiography, is a common cardiography test used in hospitals to detect heart attacks and strokes following irregular heart beats.

EKGs are medical tests that typically use electrodes, which are placed on a person's skin, in order to monitor electrical patterns in between heartbeats.

Today's report says work on the Apple Watch with a built-in EKG reader is "ongoing and Apple may still decide not to include the technology in future products" so we'll have to wait and see how soon this ships if ever, but it's certainly positive news for the device if it happens.

While the inclusion of this feature will tempt many into buying future Apple Watch models, a cardiologist at University of California has stated such an Apple Watch, should it come to fruition, isn't intended for people who don't experience heart-related issues, such as arrhythmia. Apple spokeswoman Amy Bessette declined to comment. Data from the research may help Apple develop artificial intelligence-based tools that can spot abnormalities more easily and support the EKG project. It's called the Apple Heart Study app.

Apple Insider pointed out that the new report comes a few weeks after AlivCor's Kardia Band EKG meter received certification from the FDA to be an Apple Watch accessory. However, it does align with the company's growing interest in the health and heart health space.

On Thursday, Bloomberg reported that the Cupertino giant is now testing the use of Apple Watch as an EKG.
