Gruden on Raiders offer: `C'mon man . . . I've got nothing to report'

Raiders looking to reunite with Jon Gruden Gruden on Raiders offer: `C'mon man . . . I've got nothing to report'

The Oakland Raiders are planning on offering Jon Gruden to become the team's next head coach, according to Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

Additionally, per the report Mark Davis has offered Gruden an ownership stake previously, which could potentially come into play again. He has frequently been rumored to fill coaching vacancies, pro and college, since his firing by Tampa Bay after the 2008 season.

As a disappointing season comes to a close, the Raiders are reportedly preparing to offer their head coaching job to ESPN Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden, who coached the franchise from 1998-2001 before spending the next seven seasons as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Del Rio's agent, Bob LaMonte, also represents Gruden, leading to what one source described as "a lot of sensitive situations".

The sentimental pull of hiring Gruden is obvious. And the Raiders have made other attempts in other years at bringing back Gruden, who still is beloved in the San Francisco Bay Area. A large number of Raiders fans would likely welcome him back with open arms.

Gruden hasn't coached since 2008 and there's a real, legitimate debate as to whether or not he's actually the elite coach some bill him as. And it's of course notable that these are two very plugged-in reporters that happen to work for the same network Gruden does.

On Monday night, Gruden called what may have been his last Monday Night Football game, which featured the Raiders at the Eagles. I cant say I havent taken any phone calls.

Gruden is quoted in the report: "I don't want to sit here and speculate". The NFL's finance committee also would have to vet Gruden, but there is no reason to think it would not approve the deal. Yeah, sometimes owners. Guys want to bounce ideas off me. He's making $6.5 million annually to talk about football, and not have the insane stress that comes with being an NFL head coach. "Im here to help people". This year, there are many sources who believe the Raiders are preparing to make another offer so enticing that it will be hard for Gruden to turn down.
