Customs processing outage delays global travelers

Major US airports suffer technical glitch as passport system down Customs System "Disruption" Halts Major Airports

Some travelers arriving or departing San Diego International Airport may have been delayed New Year's Day due to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection glitch.

The system went down at about 7:30 p.m. and came back online at about 9:30 p.m., customs and border protection spokeswoman Jennifer Gabris said.

Approximately 2,000 passengers were stuck in line at Miami International Airport, where this video was filmed.

Several other airports also confirmed the outage.

The outage on Monday night affected airports including New York's JFK, San Francisco and Denver, as global travellers arrived from holiday travels on New Year's Day, reports CNN.

"All airports are back on line after a temporary outage of #CBP's processing systems", the agency said in a Tweet.

Thousands of passengers reported being stranded at airports across the United States, in a delay that was caused because the passport system across the country was down Monday.

"At this time, there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature", she said.

Customs officials said the problem lasted for about two hours.

Customs says that passengers continued to be processed during the outage, "using alternative procedures at affected airports".

The agency said it had access to the national security-related databases during the outage.

A spokesperson tells CBS News that Customs and Border Patrol has been contacted and are investigating.
