According to Mundo Deportivo, Coutinho thanked Liverpool for their "interest and affection" but reiterated his desire to join Barcelona.

The page it linked to was, however, a dead link, and the text has quickly been removed.

Liverpool fans were left sweating when giant sportswear manufacturer and Barcelona apparel sponsor Nike appeared to leak the blockbuster transfer via its online store.

IBTimes UK has contacted Nike, whose kit-manufacturing deal with Barcelona was extended previous year and is rumoured to be worth approximately £120m ($162m) per season, for comment.

There's still been no word from either club or from Nike, but a handful of journalists with connections to the Liverpool end have come out today with something of a collective shrug.

Nike are responsible for Barcelona's kit and merchandise.

Liverpool are reportedly targeting West Ham United playmaker Manuel Lanzini as their preferred replacement for highly-rated midfielder Philippe Coutinho, whose lucrative January switch to Barcelona has all but been completed if a recent faux pas by Nike is to be believed. Anything might be possible, but as far as they know it the situation remains unchanged and they don't expect a Coutinho deal to be done in January.

Sky Sports pundit Guillem Balague has excellent connections at Liverpool.
