The suit, which alleges that Spotify is using thousands of songs without a proper license, was filed on December 29 in California federal court. Some of these songs are owned by Wixen via copyright.
"Wixen, an exclusive licensee of songs such as "Free Fallin" by Tom Petty, "Light My Fire" by the Doors, "(Girl We Got a) Good Thing" by Weezer and works of singers such as Stevie Nicks, is seeking damages worth at least $1.6 billion along with injunctive relief.
It's been a big week for Spotify as reports emerged that the music-streaming behemoth has confidentially filed IPO documents ahead of a planned direct stock exchange listing in the first half of 2018.
The lawsuit alleged Spotify had used thousands of songs without properly getting the license to distribute them, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Wixen is the exclusive publisher of some of the most popular songs by a lot of top artists in the music industry.
Meanwhile, Spotify itself filed a claim the very same day. Wixen Music Publishing, which represents compositions by Tom Petty, Neil Young and others, alleges that Spotify does not have a license to stream the songs. They already have a $43 million settlement which was proposed back in May.
Ever since the capacity to stream data like movies, television shows, and the music was developed there has been a battle between publishers, labels and artists to protect their content from being illegally shared without them being properly compensated for it.
