Former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Yadav has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail in connection with the fodder scam.

The Bihar Congress on Saturday asserted that Lalu Prasad's conviction in a fodder scam case will not have any impact on the party's ties with the RJD in the state. He was asked to pay a fine of five lakhs.

"The BJP, RSS and Nitish Kumar had got threatened with Lalu Prasad's effort for opposition's unity against BJP and Narendra Modi after the party had organised BJP bhagao, Desh bachao rally in Patna, so they conspired to send him to jail... but we'll not be cowed down with Lalu Prasad in jail but will come out more stronger", said Tejaswi Yadav.

Lalu Prasad is also facing trial in three more cases relating to the fodder scam, also known as "chara ghotala".

Lalu was found guilty in another fodder scam case in 2013 after which he had to resign from his Lok Sabha seat.

He also slapped a Rs 5 lakh fine on the former Bihar Chief Minister.

Furthermore, in the wake of court's ruling and pronouncement of sentence against Lalu Prasad Yadav senior members of the RJD are expected to meet today to discuss the party's strategy and the "emerging political situation".

He was convicted by the court on December 23, 2017, and has been lodged in Birsa Munda prison since then.

Prasad's counsel Chittaranjan Sinha said his client would filed an appeal next week against the verdict in the Jharkhand high court. "He was chosen (by the people of Bihar in an election) and he's in jail", said the former Deputy Chief Minister in the Grand Alliance government.

Four years ago, Lalu Yadav was convicted in the first case of fodder scam and was given a five-year jail term.

The case pertains to an alleged withdrawal of Rs. 89.27 lakh from Deoghar district treasury between 1994 and 1996.
