Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton went to the sideline after sustaining a vicious sack from New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata in the fourth quarter of the teams' wild-card matchup.

The team soon indicated he'd been cleared of a concussion.

Panthers interim general manager Marty Hurney said the medical staff "did everything the right way" when it came to handling Newton's injury.

The NFL revised the concussion protocol after Houston Texans QB Tom Savage was let back into a game following a hit that left him shaking on the ground, though the Texans were not fined.

The organisation stipulates that any player suspected of having concussion must be evaluated in the dressing room. He sat out one play, but returned on the next series and finished the game. After the game, Newton said he was hit in the eye and that the concussion test was precautionary, per Tiffany Blackmon of the NFL Network.

"We did everything the right way", Hurney said (per the Charlotte Observer). He was replaced the next play, but as he made his way off the sideline he stubbled and needed help to get back up off the field. The league and players' union conducted probes previous year after Newton took a hard hit to the head late in the season opener at Denver but did not come out of the game.
