Ecuador gives Assange citizenship, seeks solution with Britain

The Foreign Office said in a statement the only way for the embassy to resolve Assange's issue would be for him to leave its premises and face justice.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who has been holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London to avoid arrest and extradition to the U.S., was on Thursday denied diplomatic status by the UK Government.

A United Nations panel has said that Assange had been "arbitrarily detained" and should be able to claim compensation from Britain and Sweden.

The decision to grant citizenship comes amid flurry of activity suggesting that Ecuador had ramped up efforts to find a solution for Assange.

While Swedish officials dropped their investigation into a rape claim involving Assange, the United Kingdom has repeatedly said that he would be arrested by police for breaking a prior bail condition should he step outside the embassy.

"The UK should not permit itself to be intimidated by the Trump administration's public threats to 'take down" Mr Assange'.

The WikiLeaks founder has been holed up in Knightsbridge since the summer of 2012, when he faced the prospect of extradition to Sweden over claims that he sexually assaulted two women.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Espinosa said officials were looking for a third country or a prominent worldwide figure to help extricate Assange from the embassy and move him somewhere else.

He make a speech, calling for the government to 'drop the witch-hunt against WikiLeaks.

The rape allegations case remains open and active. You also can't blame the man for trying to get out in a way that would make it harder for him to be extradited to the United States of America, particularly after US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said his arrest was "a priority" last April.

In March, Swedish prosecutors offer to question Assange in London.

June 19, 2017: Assange cancels a "special announcement" he had planned for the fifth anniversary of his stay at the Embassy.

He said the decision to grant him asylum in 2012 had "generated problems" in Ecuador and had only discredited the country overseas, particularly in the United States.
