How Facebook's latest changes will affect the modus operandi of Travel Agents Facebook's New Campaign to Combat 'Fake News' : What It Means for Your News Feed

Facebook feed has become the staple source of news and information for many of us. "If you follow a local publisher or if someone shares a local story, it may show up higher in [your] news feed".

Some small publishers may have been left out of today's update, Facebook said, but it plans to refine its algorithms over time to include as many local sources as possible.

Pressure has been building on Facebook and its CEO as the toxic content flowing through Facebook - violent live videos, fabricated news articles and divisive messages from Russian operatives that rocked the 2016 US presidential campaign - has been blamed for social problems.

"I don't think there will be much impact from the News Feed changes on how advertisers think about Facebook".

"People consistently tell us they want to see more local news on Facebook", Zuckerberg wrote in a post on Facebook.

Facebook said it ended the quarter with 2.13 billion monthly active users, up 14% from the year-ago period.

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg also noted that recent changes to its News Feed reduced the amount of time people spent on the network by 50 million hours every day. "In 2018, we're focused on making sure Facebook isn't just fun to use, but also good for people's well-being and for society".

"Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives", Zuckerberg added.

"Local news helps build community - both on and offline".

He wasn't kidding. Those changes that got underway last quarter are already hitting engagement numbers as Facebook shows people fewer viral videos.

To start, this change is taking effect in the United States, and we plan to expand to more countries this year.

In 2017, about two-thirds of Americans got at least some of their news on social media, according to the Pew Research Center.

We've worked closely with local publishers through the Facebook Journalism Project over the previous year, visiting newsrooms around the world to provide training and support for journalists, as well as building products that work for their publications and readers.

Facebook said about 1.40 billion people were using its service daily as of December 31, up 14 percent from a year earlier, compared with analysts' estimate of 1.41 billion, according to financial data and analytics firm FactSet.

Facebook offered better news for investors in its financial results, once again beating Wall Street expectations in the fourth quarter, with $12.97 billion in revenue, up from $8.8 billion a year ago. The tech firm is scheduled to report its fourth quarter results on Wednesday.
