Iranian Foreign Minister Warns on Trump's Dangerous Nuclear Strategy

Iran's Hassan Rouhani on Donald Trump US nukes bringing humankind closer to annihilation

Iran accused the US on Sunday of threatening Russian Federation with new atomic weapons after Washington published a document on Friday outlining plans to expand its nuclear capabilities to deter others.

Iranian President Hassan Rohani on February 4 accused the United States of "shamelessly threatening Russian Federation with a new atomic weapon".

In addition Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif earlier warned in a tweet that the United States policy risked "bringing humankind closer to annihilation".

China on Sunday criticized a USA government report that cast Beijing as a potential nuclear adversary and called on Washington to reduce its own much larger arsenal and join in promoting regional stability.

"The change in direction of the United States to make the use of nuclear weapons easier goes against the emotions of A-bomb survivors and the global trend toward nuclear abolition", he said.

Zarif charged that "the revision of the 2018 nuclear strategy" by the United States will bring humankind's annihilation closer.

James Acton, a nuclear weapons specialist at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said that offer seems disingenuous.

The Nuclear Posture Review, a report customarily done at the outset of a new USA administration, outlines the Pentagon's nuclear goals under Trump. "The Americans are shamelessly threatening Russian Federation with a new atomic weapon".

Robert Soofer, a senior nuclear policy official at the Pentagon who helped direct the policy review, said Moscow is likely to push back on the US plan for fielding those two additional weapons.

Russia's Foreign Ministry on Saturday expressed disappointment at the USA policy, saying the contents come off as confrontational and anti-Russian, according to the report.

"Our long-term aim must continue to be a world without nuclear weapons", Gabriel said - the stated aim of U.S. nuclear policy under Barack Obama.

"In my view, it will stimulate an effort by countries that feel threatened by the United States to develop nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them to USA soil", he said.

The hawkish paper, consistent with the previously released National Security Strategy and the National Defense Strategy, painted a bleak picture for US security, and called for more dominant role for nuclear weapons in its arsenal.

In his tweet, Zarif also said: "Trump's obduracy in killing the #JCPOA [Iran's nuclear deal with world powers] stems from ... unsafe imprudence".
