Planets outside Milky Way, Scientists found Extragalactic Galaxies

Planets beyond Milky Way discovered Exoplanets from another galaxy spotted - take that, Kepler fatigue!

Since many years scientists have been trying to detect planets outside of Milky Way Galaxy but it was quite hard to detect that as they are very small things situated so far away.

In order to get a better look at the blackness surrounding stars in other galaxies, researchers from the University of Oklahoma have made use of a technique called gravitational microlensing to peer further out into space than would otherwise be possible.

The planet discovered is around 3.8 Billion light years away from the earth.

In an incredible world first, astrophysicists have detected multiple planets in another galaxy, ranging from masses as small as the Moon to ones as great as Jupiter.

The galaxy, Dai said, acts like a magnifying glass, bringing a previously unseen celestial body into X-ray view.

For the first time, scientists have discovered a group of planets beyond the Milky Way, The Washington Post reported on Monday.

"These small planets are the best candidate for the signature we observed in this study using the microlensing technique", said Dai.

"We show that quasar microlensing provides a means to probe extragalactic planets in the lens galaxy, by studying the microlensing properties of emission close to the event horizon of the supermassive black hole of the background quasar, using the current generation telescopes", the researchers write.

We tend to assume that other galaxies have planets - after all, why should the Milky Way be unique? - but this could be the first, albeit indirect, evidence for these distant worlds.

Usually astronomers find planets through one of two ways: watching a planet dim the light of a star as it passes across the star - the transit method - or watching a star wobble due to planets orbiting around it - the radial velocity method.

Scientists have long thought that exoplanets-planets beyond the solar system-were restricted to the confines of our Milky Way.

The microlensing technique was initially used to detect planets outside of our solar system.

University of Oklahoma postdoctoral researcher Eduardo Guerras said: "This is an example of how powerful the techniques of analysis of extragalactic microlensing can be".

Of course, the astronomers have not seen these planets directly, and perhaps, they will never be able to do it. In order to discover planets in a galaxy which is further away, scientists would have to use something stronger than the light of a single star.

Guerras explained that there is not the slightest chance of observing these planets directly. "This is very cool science", Guerras added.
