The death toll in the Syrian government's intensive airstrikes on rebel-held areas near the capital Damascus has risen to 70, a monitoring group says.

Radi Saad, from the chemical weapons team of the White Helmets civil defense group that operates in rebel-held parts of Syria, told Reuters three of the nine people who suffered from "suffocation injuries" were rescuers responding to the incident.

Residents across several Syrian battlefronts have reported escalating bombardment and have accused Syrian troops of deploying toxic chemicals against rebel-held zones.

On Monday, air strikes killed 30 people in Eastern Ghouta, the Observatory said.

It released a video of its workers rushing to rescue victims from the debris on Tuesday.

Almost 200 people were wounded, and rescuers said many of those probably will not survive because of lack of medical supplies.

The U.N. mission in Damascus warned Tuesday of "dire consequences" to the humanitarian crises in Syria, identifying seven areas needing urgent relief.

The UN said existing agreements on the delivery of aid were not being honoured and stressed that "if access was granted, three convoys could be dispatched each week, reaching over 700,000 people in these areas in two months".

Syria's multisided war has drawn in armies and insurgents from around the world, aggravating a conflict that began in 2011 as an uprising against Assad. Though Assad appears to have survived the insurgency, his forces continue to bomb and besiege opposition pockets around the country, including in Eastern Ghouta and Idlib.

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said last week that the Syrian government had repeatedly used chlorine as a weapon, and Washington was also concerned about the potential use of sarin gas.

Iran urged Turkey on Monday to stop its two-week-old military offensive against the Kurdish YPG militia in northern Syria's Afrin region, which neighbours Idlib. An offensive by Ankara to rout US -backed Syrian Kurdish fighters from the northern enclave of Afrin is now in its third week.

"They're going to take us into Turkey, and in Turkey we are going to meet someone from the Canadian embassy", Bimbachi said.
