Salma Hayek has been one of the empowering voices behind the #MeToo movement since detailing the abuse she endured from Harvey Weinstein in a piece for The New York Times.

Unfortunately for Hayek, though, that sense of solidarity among other women was accompanied by a sense of personal shame, as she told Oprah Winfrey on the Oprah's SuperSoul Conversations podcast in NY on Wednesday, in what was at first meant to be a conversation about the #MeToo movement at large.

Hayek Pinault explained to Winfrey why she had not been part of the Times' initial wave of allegations against Weinstein, and published her essay two months after the story first broke.

Hayek noted that she also hesitated because she hadn't told her husband what happened between her and Weinstein and she "thought of all these different things including my child, I didn't want to talk about it". "But I felt like my pain was so small compared to all the other stories".

"[The Times] contacted me to be a part of the first story and already by this contact, there was all this turmoil and I started crying when they asked and I ended up not doing it", Hayek said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

She added at the same time that the thought of adding her name to really long list of possible victims of Harvey Weinstein scandal wouldn't make a huge difference.

The Once Upon A Time in Mexico actress also said she was "ashamed" she didn't come forward with her story sooner, noting she was approached to be a part of the first expose.

'And then I felt ashamed, that I was a coward.

"I didn't know there was so many women".

The alleged harassment occurred when they were making the 2002 biopic Frida together and Hayek claimed Weinstein tried to thwart the project because she refused to grant him sexual favors. The people closest to Harvey basically went "Yeah, I can see that, he's always been a colossal dickhead".

Weinstein has denied all accusations of non-consensual sex but has not yet responded to a request for comment on Hayek's latest claims. I am a short, Mexican-Arab, angry woman. but I don't let that anger blur my vision. "He told me, 'I'm going to kill you, '" she continued. I went, 'Yes, no, yes, no, yes, no. "I think that sometimes we underestimate our efforts. and the power that it has for change".

Among other allegations, Hayek, 51, says Weinstein threatened to kill her, and pressured her into doing a nude scene with her female co-star (and close friend) Ashley Judd. "No, no, no, no, no", she wrote. "There always is a way out", she added.

Salma Hayek has detailed more threats of physical violence made by Harvey Weinstein on the set of Frida.

Mr. Weinstein apologizes for his boorish behavior following a screening of Frida; prompted by his disappointment in the cut of the movie - and a reason he took a firm hand in the final edit.
