Russia's foreign ministry is expressing concern over Israeli missile strikes in and is urging the sides to avoid escalating the situation.

During the call, Netanyahu had also reassured Putin that military co-ordination between their countries would continue.

Iran's expanding clout during the war, including deployments of Iran-backed forces like Lebanon's Hizbollah near the Golan frontier, has raised alarm in Israel, which has said it would act against any threat from its regional arch-enemy, Teheran.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that Syrian air defense forces had responded Saturday to what they called Israeli "aggression" by hitting more than one Israeli plane following attacks on a Syrian military base by Israeli jets.

Israel said several of the sites it targeted on Saturday "are part of Iran's military establishment in Syria". "This was a defensive effort triggered by an Iranian act of aggression and we are defending our airspace, our sovereignty and civilians", an Israeli military spokesman said on Saturday.

In response to the incursion, Israeli jets attacked the launch site - an Iranian installation in Syria.

The Israeli army shot down an Iranian drone launched from Syria and struck a number of Iranian targets in the war-torn country, according to the Israeli military.

The pilots landed in Israeli territory and were taken to the hospital for medical treatment. Hezbollah, which has sent thousands of fighters to back the troops of Syrian President Bashar Assad, said the developments mean "a decisive end to old arrangements". Israeli military spokesman Jonathan Conricus warned that Syria and Iran were "playing with fire", but stressed his country was not seeking an escalation. The Israeli army released images on Twitter yesterday night showing what it said was the Iranian drone. On a visit to Israel last month, US Vice President Mike Pence called Iran the world's "leading state sponsor of terror".

The senior commander said the Zionist regime has been created by the USA and the United Kingdom, adding the Islamic Republic of Iran began to inflict heavy blows on the U.S. since early years of the Islamic Revolution.

The military says it has the drone in its possession.

Iran, along with Russian Federation - which had helped prop up the Assad government - denied that any of its drones had entered Israeli air space or that they had any role in shooting down the Israeli jet.

The pilots of one of the Israeli F16s recognized that one missile had locked onto their aircraft and the two pilots ejected from the jet, which crashed in the lower Galilee.

In response, Syria shot down more than one Israeli fighter jets, according the official. It said the bases are used by both Iranian and Russian military personnel deployed in support of the regime. The eight Israeli jets were met again by anti-aircraft fire, leading to another round of air-raid sirens across the Golan Heights.

"This is a severe attack and a breach of Israeli sovereignty perpetrated by Iran".

The pilots of an F16 abandoned in flight their aircraft that crashed in the region of the Jezreel Valley (north).
