"The REC would like to appeal to the NEC members to speak in unison on this matter and manage contradictory statements that cause confusion in the rank and file and society at large."The more the matter is prolonged, the more the people of South Africa are losing hope in the ANC and opportunistic elements occupy the space, exclusively to topple the ANC from power". It said the leaders, who have participated in discussions on Zuma's exit, dropped out because of "various other commitments".

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that he was in talks with Zuma about his future as the president of the country. Speculation is swirling in the absence of any information about the talks; some wonder whether Zuma is pushing for immunity from prosecution in exchange for his resignation.

Steenhuisen said uncertainty was bad for the country and disruptive for the business of Parliament, where the Speaker this week took the extraordinary step of postponing the president's annual State of the Nation address to allow the ANC to settle its leadership battle.

Jailed for 27 years, the anti-apartheid leader addressed an ecstatic crowd from the balcony of Cape Town's City Hall on February 11, 1990 and was elected as South Africa's first black president four years later.

Mandela, who died in December 2013 at the age of 95, preached reconciliation and forgiveness among South Africans of different races.

Ramaphosa also used the occasion to praise the Congress of South African Unions (Cosatu) for the role it played in ensuring that the minimum wage is finalised and implemented this year from May 1. "As we emerge from a period of difficulty, a period of disunity and discord, this Nelson Mandela centenary year offers us what I would call, a new beginning". He became president in 2009 and has been enmeshed in scandals, including multi-million-dollar upgrades to his private home and the alleged looting of state enterprises by his associates.

"Jacob Zuma must face the full consequences of his actions whatever they may be, and there can be no deal or leniency for him or his family".

The party has only said that the talks were "constructive".

Speaking at the Mandela celebration on Sunday, Cosatu second deputy-president: Zingiswa Losi said Zuma had to be recalled in the interest of the country. Many former supporters in the ANC, the party of Mandela, want him to resign immediately so that they can try to recover the confidence of alienated voters.

While the 65-year-old lawyer's rise to the ANC's top post assured him of being its presidential candidate in elections next year, the new leadership wants an early exit for Zuma so it can begin rebuilding support.

South Africa's ANC has called a meeting of its national executive for Monday, as Ramaphosa and his allies lobby for President Zuma to step down.
