The Colts aren't looking to have another head coaching debacle. The following year, he rose to the position of quarterbacks coach, upon the retirement of Tony Dungy and Jim Caldwell's rise to his position, and becoming the wide receivers coach in 2011. But when McDaniels backed out of the deal eight hours later, the Colts had to start over.

Reich had spent the last four years as National Football League offensive coordinator with the then San Diego Chargers (2014-15) and the Eagles (2016-17).

The Colts have a new head coach.

After McDaniels' reversal, general manager Chris Ballard launched a second search that included interviews with New Orleans' assistant Dan Campbell, Reich and Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. Reich was the hot name after the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl. Garafolo reported the two sides agreed to a five-year deal (though, as we learned this week, nothing is completely official until a contract is signed).

The Colts announced they've officially hired Frank Reich, the former Eagles offensive coordinator. He helped Nick Foles win the Super Bowl MVP.

Although Reich did not call plays for the Eagles, he had a big role in the offense.

"We'll move forward. and we will get the right leader for the Indianapolis Colts, one that believes what we believe and wants to go where we want to go, " Ballard said earlier this week.

Nonetheless, the Colts are acting quickly to attempt their comeback after McDaniels left them high and dry, and in Reich, they found not only the guy who beat him in the Super Bowl, but the former Bills backup quarterback who authored the greatest comeback ever.

If Reich leaves as expected, Pederson likely would consider promoting running backs coach Duce Staley to offensive coordinator.

The Colts might actually stumble into a better hire than originally thought.
