Woman has British accent after medical procedure

According to news agency UPI, Michelle Myers, a former beauty queen said that she woke from a headache-induced nap about seven years ago to find she was speaking with an Irish accent.

Because of a rare genetic disease, a woman woke up with different accents three times already.

A mother of seven went to bed with a raging headache and woke up with a British accent that's here to stay.

"They send in the psychiatrist at the hospital and make sure you're not a loon", said Myers.

It was proven that Myers is not insane nor is she faking her changing accents.

She said that she has been diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome, an extremely rare condition in which patients suddenly perceive themselves to speak with a foreign accent. Her family, including her seven children, helped her.

Myers's situation is especially peculiar since her accent doesn't sound like a speech disruption-on the contrary, it comes across as quite refined.

According to the University of Texas at Dallas, FAS has been documented in hundreds of cases globally, including accent changes from Japanese to Korean, British English to French, American English to British, and Spanish to Hungarian. "I have come to terms with the fact I might sound like this forever", she told The Sun.

FAS is extremely rare and usually appears as a outcome of a stroke, brain damage, and in Meyers' case, underlying medical issues. She's been diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome.

While having an accent change may not seem like a big deal, Myers is saddened by the way her condition has affected her life.

"I was scared to go to the doctor, though, because I thought he'd say I was just insane, if I started sounding Irish, as I did at that point".

She has been to the hospital more times than she can count and the stack of medical records she keeps in the house says she has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

"I was Miss Black Austin Texas when I was younger, but I feel like I'm not that person anymore", she added.

Myers' chief concern is that she be taken seriously by those in her life.

"Some people think it's physiological; others think it's psychological", Myers was quoted as saying in the report.

As for Myers, she thinks that her Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome diagnosis triggered this unusual condition. "We just really want to be taken seriously and if it is something that's going to hurt me, help me", declares Myers. "People like me - we don't care which one it is", she explained.
