IPhone Locked For 48 Years After 2-Year-Old Enters Wrong Passcode

Chinese toddler 'disables iPhone for 47 years' Toddler hacks mum's iPhone and locks her out for 48 years

A Chinese woman was surprised one day in January when her 2-year-old son managed to lock her iPhone for 47 years.

The mother, identified only by her surname, Lu, said she took her eye off her son for long enough for him to lock the phone for nearly five decades.

One mother in Shanghai learnt this the hard way, after she left her iPhone with her two-year-old son so he could watch educational videos, reported Chinese media.

The child, from Shanghai, China, kept pressing the wrong numbers until eventually the phone locked for more than 25 million minutes - the equivalent of nearly 48 years. The child proceeded to enter the wrong passcode over and over again, forcing the iPhone to increase the amount of time which had to pass before it could unfreeze.

In a post to online forum Mumsnet, the woman, identified only be her surname Lu, shared a picture of her locked device.

When Lu took her phone into an Apple store in Shanghai, Wei Chunlong, a technician, told her she could either choose to wait a few years before attempting to re-enter the passcode or reset her device, which will cost her all data not yet uploaded to the cloud.

Ms Lu has waited for two months but has seen no sign of the problem rectifying itself, reports suggest.

The latter option would mean she would lose all the files in her phone memory. Unfortunately, Chunlong says that in this specific case, the mother will have to wipe the phone and start from fresh if she doesn't want to wait.

The iOS device becomes "disabled" after six concurrent incorrect PIN attempts, but also has a feature to delete the phone's data after 10 incorrect attempts.

Wei told the website that there have been cases where iPhones were disabled for 80 years in the same manner.

The unfortunate incident could happen to any Apple device.

If you've kept a backup, the phone will be restored as it was before the locking incident.
