Technical glitch hits Sydney airport, delaying flights

The airport is yet to estimate when the issue will be completely resolved.

Earlier, the airport tweeted the incident was "ongoing" and would cause delays for passengers trying to get through the security screening process.

Qantas' domestic Terminal 3 was not affected.

The technical glitch and subsequent delays come several months after flights were grounded at Sydney Airport's domestic terminal in September past year, due to a technical fault with an air traffic control system, managed by Airservices Australia.

It also added that it was working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, while advising passengers and visitors to avoid T1 and T2 until further notice.

Sydney Airport released a statement about six am, blaming "technical issues" at T1 and T2, which were causing interruptions to passenger processing and delays. The airport has now resumed processing passengers as per usual, it said on Twitter, without specifying details of the problem.

All planes yet to take off were instructed to disembark so passengers could be re-screened.

A spokeswoman for the airport said security screens were closed for 30 minutes as a result of the breach this morning, leading to a backlog.

She said Australian Federal Police officers were investigating the matter, but an AFP spokesman said the agency was not involved.
