Opening Up the Oscars: The Awkward Politics of the Academy Awards The 'anti-Trump' Oscars were a ratings disaster, and conservatives are delighted

A headline on the Daily Caller's website read, "The Ratings For Jimmy Kimmel's Trump Hate-Fest Oscars Crater Towards All-Time Low".

The Shape of Water emerged as the big victor with four honours at the event where stars mostly stayed away from the industry's concerns over Trump's administration - a contrast from a politics-heavy Golden Globes and Emmys.

Considering the war of words that Trump had with some actors in the run-up to the 2017 Oscars, it is hard to accept Trump's claim that his recent observation is a joke.

In one Trump jab, Kimmel quipped, "None other than President Trump called "Get Out" the best first three-quarters of a movie this year".

After mostly ignoring Hollywood for months, Trump seems to be making up for lost time lately, firing off tweets at Alec Baldwin for his "terrible impersonation" on Saturday Night Live and a "very insecure" Oprah Winfrey on Twitter.

Only four years ago the Oscar reached almost 44 million viewers.

This little disparity did not go unnoticed by the Commander in Chief, who tweeted on Tuesday morning, "Lowest rated Oscars in HISTORY".

Kimmel, who hosted the Oscars, was quick to do so.

A man was arrested and is accused of stealing Frances McDormand's Oscars trophy after the Academy Awards on Sunday night, Los Angeles police said.

And the show, for the most part, stayed away from the industry's concerns over the Trump administration (a contrast from a politics-heavy Golden Globes and Emmys), though it did emphasise the #MeToo and Time's Up movements.

Of course, Hollywood liberals are a glutton for punishment, since they believe they are on the side of the angels, and all those who disagree are flyover rubes who are still stuck in the dark ages. The Academy Awards are often the most-watched television program of the year after the Super Bowl, but this year's Winter Olympics opening ceremony from Pyeongchang reached 27.8 million.

For example, "The Shape of Water", which won Best Picture, has made $57 million domestically.

There weren't almost as many as men, despite the historic nominations for Greta Gerwig (the fifth woman nominated for best director) and Rachel Morrison ("Mudbound"), the first woman nominated for best cinematography. It's the fourth consecutive year that viewership has declined.

"We don't make movies like "Call Me by Your Name" for money". "The last Oscar ceremony I watched was in 2016 because my favorite actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, was nominated to the Oscars for his role in "The Revenant", he said. He keeps his hands where you can see them.
