850 sq km now under control in Afrin: Erdogan

TAF 3,055 terrorists 'neutralized' in Afrin operation 850 sq km now under control in Afrin: Erdogan

The move came a day after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his troops and the Syrian fighters they were backing could break into the Kurdish-controlled town "at any moment".

"The operations in Afrin will continue until this swamp of terror is dried", Erdogan warned.

The military intervention came after the U.S. said it would set up a 30,000-strong militant border force at Turkish doorstep.

Tensions between the United States and Turkey has escalated as a result of the operation, with Ankara accusing Washington of leaving pockets of Daesh militants in Syria intact to justify continued cooperation with Kurdish forces in the country.

"Turkey will make sure the east of the Euphrates to the Iraqi border is cleansed of any terrorist group after operations in Syria", he said.

"The entire [area] is 2,000 square kilometer".

"The number of neutralized terrorists in Afrin has risen to 3,213".

Erdogan noted that a total of 815 square kilometres (506 square miles) have been cleared from the terrorists so far.

The operation is being carried out under the framework of Turkey's rights based on global law, UN Security Council resolutions, its self-defense rights under the UN charter, and respect for Syria's territorial integrity.

"Right now, Afrin city centre is surrounded".

Despite encountering fierce resistance - which has caused the death of 42 Turkish troops - Turkey's military and its Syrian allies appear to have gained new momentum in the last weeks.

Euphrates Shield, which began in August in 2016 and ended in March 2017, eliminated terrorists along the Syrian border.

Ankara claimed that its military campaign was aimed at pushing the Daesh Takfiri terrorist group from Turkey's border with Syria and stopping the advance of Kurdish militia, who were themselves fighting Daesh.
