England Sevens will face Australia in the fifth place play-off at HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Vancouver after beating New Zealand.

It was an even contest throughout the opening seven minutes with neither side seriously testing the try line, until Oscar Ouma latched onto the ball in space and broke England's defensive line for a 0-7 half-time lead.

Australia, who are fourth in the 10-stop competition's standings, topped their group on Saturday with two wins and a draw.

In the other Semif-final, South Africa will lock horns with Fiji.

Kenya had reached the semis with a 12-0 quarter-final win over England, their first over that side since 2011.

The Blitzboks, who beat the United States 29-7 in the bronze medal game, maintained their lead on 109 points, with Fiji just eight back at 101 and New Zealand third on 92. Canada's Nathan Hirayama did however secure his own milestone as he passed sevens' great Waisale Serevi on the all-time points table with a total of 1328.

Kenya had to dig deep after falling 19-12 in the second half with less than two minutes to go.

It is the first Kenya has qualified for the Main Cup semi-final since 2016 when they won the Singapore Sevens title.

Sevuloni Mocenacagi scored two tries, the second of which launched Fiji's second-half surge.

New Zealand opened Pool D edging Scotland 31-26 with five tries to four and evening the score after Scotland beat the New Zealand Sevens last weekend in Las Vegas.

New Zealand had earlier beaten Scotland and Russian Federation in contrasting matches, battling to defeat the Scots 31-26 before dissecting Russian Federation 31-5 and going on to account for South Africa 33-14.

The five tournaments held thus far have produced five different winners - South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji and the US. New Zealand Captain Scott Curry spoke to us about his sides clean sweep on day one in Canada.
