It was unclear whether Acton's feelings about Facebook extend to his own app. Facebook knew about the data leak back in 2015, but the public only learned after reports in the New York Times and Observer last weekend. "Consumers have a right to know how their information is used - and companies like Facebook have a fundamental responsibility to protect their users' personal information", wrote NY attorney general Eric T. Schneiderman.
Meanwhile, The Guardian quotes a Facebook spokeswoman saying, "Mark, Sheryl and their teams are working around the clock to get all the facts and take the appropriate action moving forward, because they understand the seriousness of this issue".
In what will surely be another blow to Facebook, WhatsApp cofounder Brian Acton appears to have joined the growing movement to leave the social network.
Facebook said University of Cambridge psychologist Aleksandr Kogan, who developed the app used to harvest user data, also agreed to cooperate. Facebook said Friday that Kogan "lied to us" and did not delete the data as they demanded. This is not the first time that a former Facebook executive has showed discomfort after leaving the company. Interestingly Facebook also suspended the account of the whistleblower Christopher Wylie, who revealed key details and documents about the whole exercise.
