Missouri Governor Appoints Cindy Hyde-Smith to Fill Thad Cochran's Senate Seat

State Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce Cindy Hyde Smith speaks about the positive actions of her department to protect and enhance the lot of the state's farmers during her address at the Neshoba County Fair in Philadelphia Miss.. Known BILL CRAWFORD: McDaniel Switcheroo Shifts Hot Seat from Wicker to Bryant

Mr. Bryant is said to favor Ms. Hyde-Smith for reasons relating to both politics and personal affinity, viewing her as a rural populist in his own fashion. But he's throwing his hat back in the ring for Cochran's seat. There is no doubt that the Republican Party still feels the sting from their electoral upset last December when Democrat Doug Jones defeated embattled Senator Roy Moore in a special election to fill the seat previously held by the now Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Several well known Democratic candidates are expected to run as well.

The Mississippi governor's appointment of Cindy Hyde-Smith to the Senate next month marks a milestone: She will be the state's first woman in Congress. Although it is a deeply conservative state, Democrats are hoping to capitalize on divisions among Republicans in hopes of winning a November 27 runoff, if there is one. In 2016, she was one of many agriculture advisers to Trump's presidential campaign and she praised his administration for cutting regulations on businesses. Cochran is in his second stint as chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee.

Now, there are concerns that Hyde-Smith will not be able to defeat Chris McDaniel, a hard-right state senator who also is running in the November 6 special election and has been sharply critical of McConnell. But the governor has criticized McDaniel for switching races after he initially declared his candidacy against Sen.

Sen. Roger Wicker (R) is up for reelection and state Sen. McDaniel was confident that the decision came from McConnell.

BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi's Republican agriculture commissioner, who served on a farm advisory committee for President Donald Trump, was appointed Wednesday to succeed a veteran USA senator who is resigning because of poor health. "Her intellect, compassion, toughness and determination to get this done exemplify everything MS needs in the United States Senate". In New Jersey and Virginia, for example, the Democrats won governors races and a number of key state legislative elections.

Will there be a special election?

"Now, they are going to appoint one in MS", he continued. But Mr. Bryant had no appetite to go to Washington and neither did Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican who is hoping to succeed the governor in next year's election. He has told allies he believes she would excite voters in a way that a more typical Republican officeholder in Jackson, the state capital, would not, and he views her deep connections in the farming communities as significant political assets. More than 100 Republican supporters signed McDaniel's letter. Thad Cochran. Hyde-Smith switched parties in 2010 while serving in the state Senate.

"Cindy has always been a people person, has always wanted to help and do for everybody", Lowe, 67, said Wednesday in Brookhaven.

McDaniel charged that "the DC establishment would rather let a Democrat have the seat than let a conservative win". She ran as a Democrat.
