The target is part of the new Nissan M.O.V.E.to 2022 midterm plan.

Nissan and its affiliate 4R Energy Corporation have teamed up with the town of Namie, Japan, to install new streetlights that will be powered by a combination of solar panels and used batteries from the Nissan LEAF electric vehicle. The automaker is also planning a "product offensive" in China that will include electric cars developed in concert with local firms.

Nissan has been conducting autonomous driving tests in London, Tokyo and California.

As is the case with other automakers, Nissan's embrace of electrification involves more than just purely electric vehicles.

Nissan chief planning officer Philippe Klein said: "Our product and technology strategy is dedicated to positioning Nissan to lead the automotive, technology and business evolution". Also, the company aims to have an 8 per cent core operating profit margin and a cumulative free cash flow of 2.5 trillion yen. The company, which has an alliance with Renault SA of France and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., is among the most aggressive among automakers on semi-autonomous-drive technology.

Of the eight new cars that are planned, Klein said two will be all-electric versions of existing models sold in China, and the remaining six will be mostly electric-only models, including types of sport utility vehicles. It will be followed by another, manufactured together with Dongfeng on an A-segment SUV platform. Two further EVs will be launched under the Chinese Venucia brand.

Nissan's electric push will also include the expansion of its e-POWER technology.

Nissan expects that electrified vehicles - including electric vehicles and e-POWER models - will make up 40 percent of the company's sales in Japan and Europe by 2022, and 50 percent by 2025. In the United States, the expectation is about 20-30% by 2025, while in China it's 35-40%. ProPILOT, its driver-assistance system, will be offered on twenty models by 2022, Nissan predicts, and be included on a million vehicles sold each year by that point.

Nissan is also plotting to sell one million ProPilot-equipped models per year by 2022. While well short of self-driving in its current form, ProPILOT will embrace multilane autonomous driving on highways after 2022, the automaker says.
