Over 100 England fans arrested in Amsterdam after travelling to football match

Trouble started in Amsterdam on Thursday night, when police detained 25 England fans for throwing beer bottles at officers.

An initial statement, which was quickly updated to reflect the growing number, said the Amsterdam police had arrested 70 fans before it was then raised to 90.

"The sad fact is that the drunken mob's behaviour reinforces the negative stereotype of England supporters, and will impact on the treatment all fans can expect when they follow the team overseas".

'35 spent the night in a cell complex.

"The last 8 are still being held, mainly for violence against the police officers".

'I heard some of the booing of the anthem which obviously isn't acceptable, ' the England manger said.

Around 1500 fans were thought to have made the trip to the continent to follow Gareth Southgate's squad ahead of the crunch friendly match, but plenty are letting England down with their rowdy behavior.

Miles said the trouble had been caused by a minority of younger fans who had not gone to watch the football.

"It is not in the interests of the regular England followers for the anti-social behaviour to creep back in as it will inevitably impact on how we are received and treated by host police forces elsewhere".

The flare-ups in Amsterdam come a year after despicable scenes marred England's friendly against Germany in Dortmund.

"They are representing our country in the same way we are".

There were 27 members suspended in total for their behaviour in Dortmund, with a further six given written warnings while there remains one case pending.

"We condemn the unacceptable scenes in Amsterdam".

In a statement released on Twitter, the FA confirmed they will work alongside the UK Football Policing Unit in an attempt to identify those involved.

"But I would strongly urge them to behave in the right way and respect our opponents and the country they're in".
