Uber knew of problems with self-driving cars before fatal crash

'Disturbing and heartbreaking' footage of fatal self-driving crash released Uber knew of problems with self-driving cars before fatal crash

Authorities investigating a deadly self-driving vehicle crash in suburban Phoenix have released video of the Uber SUV striking a pedestrian as she walked her bicycle across a darkened street. At the time, authorities were saying the company didn't appear to be at fault and that even a human-driven auto might have hit the victim under the same circumstances.

Yet Uber's test drivers were being asked to do more - going on solo runs when they had worked in pairs.

"The car's LiDAR (light ranging and detection laser system) should have picked the pedestrian up far before it hit her", says Raj Rajkumar, who leads the autonomous vehicle research team at Carnegie Mellon University.

One question on regulators' minds will be why the sensors did not pick up on the presence of Herzberg, who would ostensibly have already crossed three lanes of traffic before arriving in the path of the Uber vehicle. The only regulation is to send an advisory letter to the state Department of Transportation.

But Uber's autonomous cars are not operating almost as well as those of its competitors.

Ting said the project is expected to conclude in June, and that he hopes the collection of more data and experiences could get the driverless auto ready for the next step of real road tests, during which it will be able to interact with other vehicles and pedestrians.

"There are more unexpected traffic scenarios in Taiwan than in the USA, which is why we need to establish a more controlled environment for driverless cars", he said.

Fall-out from the accident could stall the development and testing of self-driving vehicles, which are created to perform far better than human drivers and sharply reduce the number of motor vehicle fatalities that occur each year. First, I believe the detection system of the auto should have detected the person in the road. They're killed 80 percent of the time when the vehicle is going 40 miles per hour.

In the video, Herzberg's feet become visible only about 1.4 seconds before the final frame of the video. Despite prior reports that indicated the woman appeared "suddenly", she did not.

But then people in the Tempe area started making their own videos-videos that give a dramatically different impression of that section of roadway. Uber tallied its second million in 100 days and added its next million at an even faster clip, according to company documents. There's another example posted at Ars Technica.

"Though no information is available, one would have to conclude based on this video alone, that there are problems in the Uber vehicle software that need to be rectified", he said.

And when that video was paired with footage from inside the auto showing the backup driver not watching the road in the moments before the crash, the problem turned even uglier for Uber. While Uber bans drivers convicted of violent crimes of a felony within the last seven months, Vasquez's offenses occurred outside the seven-year timeframe.
