A suspect is under arrest in connection with suspicious packages that were sent to military bases in the Washington, DC area, U.S. media reported on Tuesday.

The packages were sent to Fort McNair, Fort Belvoir, Joint Base Anacostia - Bolling, the Central Intelligence Agency in Langley, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Dahlgren, Virginia.

"At 12:10 p.m., 52nd Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal from Fort Belvoir, VA, confirmed the package tested positive for black powder and residue", an Army spokesman, Mike Howard, said in a statement. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the packages had contained explosive components such as fuse attachments, Global Positioning System locators, and black powder.

Investigators are analyzing the packages discovered around the National Capital Region on Monday to determine whether any of them contained functioning explosive devices.

They were also delivered to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, a military base in Washington and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in northern Virginia. The package was rendered safe.

Officials said black powder was discovered in at least one package along with a fuse, but it was neutralized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Law enforcement officials asked not to be identified discussing the case because the investigation continues. It is possible that further packages were mailed to additional mail processing facilities in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. According to the Wall Street Journal, some of the packages had letters attached to them, which included "ramblings" written by the mysterious sender.

The current scare comes in the wake of the Austin package bombings that left two people dead and several injured. Authorities fear more packages could still be out there.

It is also unclear whether each facility randomly found suspicious packages or whether an alert was sent out after one was found to be suspicious.
