By 2020, the vehicles will become part of Waymo's ride-hailing taxi service, set to begin this year. The vehicles "will soon be playing a vital full-time role in Waymo's driverless transportation service", it said.

Self-driving auto company Waymo on Tuesday said it will buy up to 20,000 cars from Jaguar Land Rover in an effort to expand its autonomous vehicle technology to luxury auto market.

Waymo is going to start testing the new self-driving I-PACE in its fleet later this year.

Eventually, the company said, it hopes to provide a million rides a day.

"Our ultimate goal is to provide a self-driving vehicle tailored to every trip and every objective". Adding a fully electric vehicle to its autonomous vehicle lineup seems like a logical next step, considering it's far and away the prevailing trend across the automobile industry.

The company started testing its self-driving minivans on public roads in Novi, Michigan in late 2017.

Officially announced last month, the 2019 Jaguar I-PACE is the automaker's first entirely electric auto.

"The company knows its technology is solid and it's eager to allow a wider audience to experience it".

For season five it is also anticipated that the new Gen 2 Formula E cars will compete on the full Grand Prix circuit.

Last year, the company's vehicles drove 2 million autonomous miles across 25 United States cities - putting its total autonomous miles at 4 million. "We want to build a self-driving vehicle for every passenger and every trip", said Krafcik at the unveiling event in NY.

"This new self-driving Jaguar I-PACE blends Jaguar's knack for innovative design with Waymo's cutting-edge self-driving technology, designed and developed completely in-house", the company reports in the release. Without resorting to flash and drama during his presentation, Krafcik still left no doubt about what Waymo thinks of its partnership with Jaguar.

Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Executive Officer said: "With the Jaguar I-PACE we have a world-beating vehicle that's captured the imagination of customers around the world".

Importantly, Waymo's autonomous driving technology will be built into the I-Paces at the factory in Graz, Austria, rather than being added after the fact by Waymo in the US.
