French police have arrested a man who tried to run over a group of soldiers in south-eastern France.

A man driving a auto with fake licence plates tried to ram a group of soldiers out jogging in southeast France yesterday, security sources told AFP.

"The soldiers managed to get up onto the pavement without being hit", Brulon said.

It was not immediately clear what has been the reason behind the incident, which took place near a military barrack just days after the terrorist attack in southern France. Military sources later said a woman was also in the vehicle.

Police sealed off the area and began a search for the driver, while the army stepped up security around the barracks, Brulon said. No one was injured in the attempted attack, said the same source, adding that the police is looking for the assailant who is on the run.

The auto is a stolen Peugeot 208, according to Le Parisien.

The scare comes nearly one week after ISIS-claimed gunman Redouane Lakdim killed four people near the southern city of Carcassonne, including a police officer who exchanged himself for a hostage held at a local grocery store. The 25-year-old gunman, who claimed to be representing the Islamic State, was later shot dead by the police.

Paying tribute to the officer at a national ceremony in Paris on Wednesday, President Emmanuel Macron said his act of supreme self- sacrifice would "remain etched in French hearts".

Over 240 people have been killed in a series of jihadist attacks around France over the past three years, and the security forces have been targeted on several occasions. In August, police shot and arrested a man who deliberately rammed his vehicle into soldiers beginning a patrol in a plush Paris suburb, injuring six.
