New Zealand privacy commissioner joins criticism of Facebook data handling It's easy to hate Facebook, but it's much tougher to quit

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly apologised for the mistakes the company made and has promised to crack down on abuse of the Facebook platform and restrict developers' access to user information.

Following revelations of Cambridge Analytica's misuse of personal Facebook data, Edwards said his office requested the social network to release data about what information it holds about users as part of an investigation. A new Privacy Shortcuts option brings various Facebook privacy settings which were scattered across 20 different screens into one place.

Facebook's move comes as authorities around the globe investigate how Facebook handles and shares private data, and with its shares having tumbled more than 15 percent, wiping out tens of billions in market value.

The ministry has asked social media major to submit a reply whether the company or its related or downstream agencies utilising Facebook's data have previously been engaged by any entities "to manipulate the Indian electoral process".

Control your personal information: You can review what you've shared and delete it if you want to.

Previously, the settings were spread across almost 20 different screens and they're now accessible from a single place. The report added that the company is "trying to find more secure ways" of offering the same features.

This is a risk reduction step for Facebook, as the company would not have as much control over how firms like Experian collect their information. The political intelligence firm was Cambridge Analytica and it had received information from up to 50 million Facebook profiles using a personality quiz application from a researcher from Global Science Research company. "These updates are about transparency-not about gaining new rights to collect, use, or share data", reads the post.

If you have reached the end of the road on Facebook and feel like it no longer serves a meaningful objective in your life, perhaps it's time to delete your account.

Have a few posts on Facebook that you wish never made their way there? It should not be surprising that Facebook will have records of all your Messenger app calls and messages, a list of advertisers they've given your information to and a history of your posts, pictures and interactions. They may also delete anything from their timeline or profile using this tab.

Facebook is reportedly making changes to how its upcoming smart home device will store users' data.

Facebook also said it will propose updates to its terms of service in the coming weeks and update its privacy policy, but it gave no further details.

While they are trying to regain trust with consumers by pushing out the new measures, it's likely they would have come in whether the data scandal had happened or not.

Last year's CanTrust Index survey showed a drop in trust in the Facebook newsfeed as a source of information, following questions about Russian meddling and social media's role in swaying voters during the USA election; that trust remained low this year.
