Teenage girl shot dead in Tottenham

Man 20 becomes 31st person to be stabbed and killed in London this year The scene in south London after a man was stabbed and killed

A 17-YEAR-OLD girl was shot dead "for no reason at all" in a fatal drive-by attack during a night of violence in London.

Press Association Teenager Tanesha Melbourne was gunned down in Chalgrove Road Tottenham, north London, shortly before 9.30pm on Monday.

A woman who knew the deceased told the Press Association the victim was "just chilling with her friends" when she was shot from a auto for "no reason at all". I just can't believe it - so young.

The shocking tally means the murder rate in London has risen by 40% in just three years; the stark opposite to New York's crime statistics which have fallen by almost 90% since Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's harsh crackdown in the 1990s.

Despite the recent surge, New York, which has a slightly smaller population than London, has still suffered more murders since the start of the year.

NY and London have similar-size populations of around 8.5 million each.

Acting Det Ch Insp Glenn Butler, who is investigating the Walthamstow shooting, said: "I fully appreciate the alarm, shock and revulsion caused by this murder and other fatal shootings we have seen across London over the last few months".

A spokeswoman for London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement on Tuesday: "The Mayor is deeply concerned by violent crime in the capital - every life lost to violent crime is a tragedy".

London overtook NY in murders for the first time in modern history in February as the capital endured a dramatic surge in knife crime.

A section 60 order, which allows police to search members of the public without suspicion amid the risk of serious violence, has been put in place. The controversial practice was curbed by then-interior minister May in 2014 in response to criticism the practice targeted minorities.

The latest incidents will bring fresh scrutiny on the government's efforts to halt rising levels of violent crime around the country. Does more need to be done to combat knife crime in both cities?

In the whole of past year, there were 130 murders in London.

This is an increase of 23% rise from the previous year, while crime overall in England and Wales continues to fall.

An interior ministry spokesperson said the government was taking action "to restrict access to offensive weapons", including knives.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick recently blamed social media for the soaring rate of knife crime in the United Kingdom, saying trivial disputes could escalate into violence "within minutes" when rivals set out to goad each other on the internet.

Her death came as police were already at the scene two miles away in Markhouse Road, Walthamstow, after being called at about 22:00.

Referring to claims Tanesha was caught in cross-fire, he said: "If you are going to shoot at someone shouldn't you make sure you are pointing (the gun) at the right person?"

A spokesman for Ms May said on Tuesday that "there can be no place in our society for violent crime".
