After a drenching, Commonwealth Games open on a bright note CWG 2018 | India clinch first medal on Day 1 as P Gururaja wins silver

Nigeria suffered another defeat in the men's boxing event as Osita Umeh was outclassed by India's Manoj Kumar in the welterweight class (69kg) at this year's Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia on Thursday.

India tried to force Wales to defend in most of the final quarter as drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur's Penalty Corner attempt was also blocked in the 49th minute. Gururaja failed in his first two attempts in the clean and jerk round, but he lifted 138 kg in his third. Manika Batra hardly broke a sweat in her 11-3, 11-5, 11-3 victory over Erandi Warusawithana in the first singles before Sutirtha Mukherjee made it 2-0 up for India with an easy 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 win over Ishara Manikku Badu.

Weightlifting was not the only reason why India could boast of a good opening day.

While Pallikal got the better of Trinidad and Tobago's Charlotte Knaggs, Chinnappa sailed past Papua New Guinea's Lynette Vai. "The medals for the last three years have been rotating among the three of us", Gururaja observed.

"I went into my own little tunnel and thought "this is it, make or break", said surprise victor Wilby after a stunning late dash in the 200m breaststroke final.

The first quarter saw India struggle to build attacks as their passing was rusty, and the Welsh played with high intensity to spring a surprise for India. "It was too heavy for me", he further added.

The Indian badminton gear also defeated Sri Lanka in the opening pool games while the women's hockey team lost 2-3 to Wales.

In weightlifting, Malaysia's Muhammad Azroy Hazalwa set the Games' first Commonwealth record with a total of 261kg to win the men's 56kg class, a result he celebrated by dancing and doing a lap of honour of the lifting area.

New Zealand fared better in the men's team sprint, edging out England, who took gold through Sophie Thornhill in the women's B&VI sprint finals. Sajan Prakash failed to even make the semifinals in the same event.
