Another superb drive by Frenchman Pierre Gasly took him to a stunning fourth place for the Honda-powered Toro Rosso team ahead of Dane Kevin Magnussen of Haas.

Vettel's win pushed him up to 50 points in the drivers' standings, 17 ahead of Hamilton, with Bottas third on 22 points.

The race was won by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, thanks to a stroke of luck provided by the deployment of the virtual safety vehicle at just the right time for the German, also a four-times champion.

Vettel whooped with joy as he crossed the finish line, although his team's celebrations were more low-key than usual following the mechanic's hospitalization. He completed his fast lap in Q2 on soft compound tyres while everyone else ran on the shorter-life supersofts.

"I think it's surprising for us after Australia to be that competitive", said the German.

"I was doing the maths, oh, that pace, he's going to catch me".

In one thrilling maneuver during the race Hamilton overtook three drivers in one go.

"I'll try and eke out every last bit of power and strength from this vehicle", Hamilton said. Hamilton was low down after incurring a five-place grid penalty for an unauthorized gearbox change.

He said: 'I don't know. He admitted that this weekend was now going to be a case of damage limitation. "I started ninth so third isn't bad at all".

Raikkonen and Vettel themselves took the first two sessions, but the excitement started early in the opening session when Max Verstappen struck a curb and lost the rear end of his Red Bull, striking the barriers between turns two and three. The mechanic was taken to the hospital as Raikkonen stepped out of the auto, calling it a day.

Verstappen was automatically eliminated from the fight for the top 10, and a Dutch company made up both the racer "the McLaren" Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandorn, Brandon Hartley at Toro Rosso and Sergio Perez ("Force India)".

Sauber's Marcus Ericsson banked his first points since the 2015 Italian Grand Prix in ninth place after running an extremely long first stint on softs and switching to mediums to execute a one-stop strategy to good effect.

The race began with temperatures falling from 29 and 35 degrees Celsius respectively for air and track.

A frantic start saw Vettel hold the lead but Raikkonen got passed on the first corner by Bottas.

As the race wore on Vettel ostensibly switched strategies and stayed out, holding track position, potentially fuelled by an incident during Raikkonen's second stop, when a mechanic was struck as the Finn left the box. An electrical problem then forced the other Red Bull RB14 of Daniel Ricciardo to stop, making the hard-charging Australian a non-factor in the battle for victory. He pulled over on the side of the track because of an electrical failure, prompting the safety vehicle to come out.
