After Colin Kaepernick refuses to abandon protest, Seahawks postpone workout

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick smiles after the 49ers 22-21 win over the Los Angeles Rams during an NFL football game Saturday Dec. 24 2016 in Los Angeles Kaepernick won't stop kneeling?

The Seattle Seahawks postponed a meeting with Colin Kaepernick when he refused to stop kneeling during the national anthem, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

According to Schefter, the Seahawks backed away when Kaepernick would not promise to stop kneeling in protest during national anthem demonstrations before games next season.

Thursday's revelation is particularly notable given that Kaepernick is now suing the NFL, alleging that team owners and NFL executives colluded to keep him out of the league.

Last season, head coach Pete Carroll stated the team didn't sign him because after watching him work out, it was clear that he was a "starter" and not a backup.

While the anthem protests eventually died down last season, during the owner's meeting the topic was brought back up.

It's getting harder and harder for NFL teams to claim not signing Colin Kaepernick is exclusively a football decision.

Both outlets indicated the door has not closed on Kaepernick potentially landing in Seattle.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport sorta-kinda confirmed Schefter's report, tweeting that Seahawks decision-makers "want Colin Kaepernick to consider how he wants to proceed on everything".

When asked if Kaepernick was ever seriously considered as the backup quarterback, Schneider said he "absolutely" was, but the team ultimately went in a different direction. There were conflicting reports as to whether Kaepernick kneeling in protest during the national anthem played a role.

Yet, here again, there is an obligation while evaluating this issue to see gray areas. Duane Brown has also protested in the past, and is now on the Seahawks' roster.

It's ironic that the Seahawks are experiencing the wrath of Kaepernick supporters despite being the only team that has seriously engaged the possibility of signing Kaepernick - not once, it seems, but twice.

He started all 16 games for the 49ers in 2013, finishing the year with a 12-4 record a year after he helped lead them to Super Bowl XLVII where they ultimately lost to the Baltimore Ravens, 34-31.
