On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Cohen's office, hotel room and home, seizing numerous documents and other evidence.

Cohen has not yet been charged with any crimes, but at this point it's a foregone conclusion. Sad!

U.S. Attorney Robert Khuzami, in a motion filed with a U.S. District Court judge in NY, redacted the alleged criminal conduct for which Mr. Cohen is being investigated.

Cohen told ABC News the operation was "respectful" and "courteous", but the agents carted away documents and Cohen's electronic devices.

In a court filing on Friday, federal prosecutors confirmed that Cohen was over his firm transactions rather than his private work, chiefly under legal investigation for decades.

Prosecutors maintain, however, that Cohen was "performing little to no legal work, and that zero emails were exchanged with President Trump". He has described it as an overreach by prosecutors into the privileged communications between Mr. Cohen and his client, Mr. Trump.

Cohen and the company, represented by Brent Blakely, and Trump, represented by Charles Harder, have asked the court to send the case to arbitration - as required by the agreement.

The raids were conducted after federal prosecutors in Manhattan obtained a search warrant based, in part, on a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller, who is conducting the federal probe into ties between Trump campaign associates and Russian Federation.

Mr Cohen and Mr Davidson did not immediate respond to requests for comment. Mueller's office referred the case about his business dealings to NY but hasn't been involved since, the Manhattan prosecutors said.

"Although Cohen is an attorney, he also has several other business interests and sources of income".

Searches of lawyers' offices are rare but not unheard of, and prosecutors use what is called a separate "taint team" to review the material and exclude any documents that are covered by the attorney-client privilege.

One problem for Cohen - who is known to be very loyal to the president - is that the rap against him may include state charges, meaning that a presidential pardon wouldn't necessarily help his case.

Cohen was photographed outside the Loews Regency Hotel on Park Avenue in New York City on Friday.

Herndon, Trump's lawyer, said that after the process is resolved, the ultimate outcome on what documents are deemed unprivileged may produce new litigation.

Wood said she would likely seal that hearing from the press and public, despite objections from the New York Times, Newsday, the Associated Press and ABC.

On Monday, Cohen's attorney called the searches "completely inappropriate and unnecessary".

Attorneys separately representing President Donald Trump and his longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, argued Friday that the Justice Department should be blocked from reviewing communications between Trump and Cohen.
