Saudi to pressure rival Iran

Jordan to present achievements as president of 28th Arab summit in Saudi Arabia Syria, Iran to dominate Arab League summit

Saudi Arabia's King Salman slammed Iran's "blatant interference" in regional affairs as Arab leaders met in the kingdom on Sunday for an annual summit.

The stand-off between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt is also not expected to feature.

Saudi Arabia, which is hosting the summit in its Eastern Province city of Dhahran, is likely to seek Arab support to pile the pressure on Iran, analysts say.

Moreover, the summit affirmed the role of the General Secretariat of the Arab League as being responsible of monitoring the execution of the report's previously mentioned recommendations, in coordination with the member states.

The Saudi monarch renewed accusations for Iran of supporting terrorism and interfering in Arab affairs.

Reporters watch the speech of Saudi King Salman from a press room, during the opening of the Arab summit in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Sunday, April 15, 2018.

He added that Saudi Arabia renews its strong condemnation of Iranian "terrorism" in the region.

The summit will offer an opportunity for Arab leaders to hold smaller meetings on the sidelines to discuss and coordinate on a wide range of issues, including how to move forward on Syria, how to handle the tense situation in Gaza, and what to do about Libya.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques affirmed commitment to Yemen's unity, sovereignty, independence, security and territorial integrity, condemning Iran's terrorist activities.

"The Palestinian cause has been and will always be our main cause until the Palestinians regain their rights", he said.

Salman told leaders from across the 22-member Arab League that Iran was to blame for instability and meddling in the region.

In February, Russia vetoed a Security Council resolution that would have expressed concern over Iran's failure to block supplies of missiles to Yemen's Houthis.

Despite being a stalwart ally of the United States, the ruler also criticised US President Donald Trump's controversial decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital and shift the US embassy there.

Arab ministers at a preliminary meeting in Riyadh on Thursday focused heavily on blocking the move, unanimously condemning Trump's decision.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi said, "it is not just the issue of Arabs, but an issue of rightness against force".

Iran has always been a supporter of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad and backs Lebanon's Shia Hizbollah movement, whose fighters are deployed in Syria alongside regime forces.
