Though there were 10 accused in the case, only these five were tried. One, Sunil Joshi, a RSS pracharak, was murdered during the course of investigation. Investigation is continuing against two other suspects in the case.

Its spokesperson Sambit Patra accused Congress leaders of practising "politics of appeasement" in their stand on the court's verdict and wondered what the UPA government did in its over seven years of rule following the blast.

Hyderabad Police transferred the case to CBI after the initial investigation. But the trial court convicted two of the other accused - Devendra Gupta and Bhavesh Patel.

However, the NIA in its 2013 charge-sheet in the 2006 Malegaon blasts case left out Aseemanand as the agency did not find any link.

The judge, Ravindra Reddy, who gave the verdict in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast earlier today has resigned. According to the charge sheet filed, the accused were "angered by terrorist attacks committed on Hindus and their temples" and wanted to "avenge" them by attacking Muslim areas and places of worship. The defence counsel said the Mecca Masjid case was not connected to other cases like Ajmer dargah blast or Samjautha train blast.

For Muhammad Abdul Kareem, who was wrongly accused in the case, the blame falls not on the judiciary but the investigating officers who couldn't collect enough evidence.

Alert in Hyderabad following Makkah Masjid acquittals Police sounded an alert and beefed up the security in the communally sensitive old city in Hyderabad following the judgement of a NIA court acquitting all five accused in the 2007 Makkah Masjid blast case. The BJP demanded an apology from the Congress, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, for "defaming Hindus" while the Opposition party, in turn, questioned the impartiality of the National Investigation Agency under the Modi government.

A resident of Gujarat and head of the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, Aseemanand was formerly associated with the RSS. More than 200 witnesses were grilled and 400 documents were submitted to the court.

The NIA had placed heavy reliance on Aseemanand's confessional statement in which he had said that he made a decision to come clean was after meeting with one youth called Abdul Kaleem.
