US Says It's Still 'Locked And Loaded' For New Strikes In Syria

Algeria has criticised air strikes carried out by the United States, France and Britain against Syria, Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia said on Saturday. An alleged gas attack last weekend in the town of Douma killed more than 40 people, according to opposition activists and rescuers.

The United States said its strikes were a response to al-Assad's chemical weapons attack that administration officials say employed chlorine and perhaps even sarin, a more deadly nerve agent.

The bombings, hailed by US President Donald Trump as a success but denounced by Damascus and its allies as an act of aggression, marked the biggest intervention by Western countries against Mr Assad and his ally Russian Federation. He added, "So proud of our great Military which will soon be, after the spending of billions of fully approved dollars, the finest that our Country has ever had". A UN Security Council vote brought by Syria's ally, Russia, and condemning the US-led strikes was rejected.

"A significant body of information including intelligence indicates the Syrian regime is responsible for this latest attack and we know that the Syrian regime has a track record of using chemical weapons against its own people", said Karen Pierce, UK Ambassador to UN.

But the three countries said the strikes were limited to Syria's chemical weapons capabilities and not aimed at toppling Assad or intervening in the civil war.

U.S. envoy Haley also said that if Trump draws the red line, he enforces it and the USA will continue to sustain pressure on Syria.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has indicated new economic sanctions will be announced Monday against Russian Federation for enabling Assad's government to continue using chemical weapons.

It was the site where some of the 110 U.S., French and British missiles hit Syria in the early morning hours, according to a Syrian military statement.

A survivor of a Syrian gas attack in 2013 now living in the U.S.as a refugee thanked President Donald Trump on Saturday for "showing true leadership and bravery" in Friday's strike on Bashar al-Assad's chemical weapons operations.

Nikki Hayley, the United States envoy to the UN, told the Security Council its forces were ready, "locked and loaded", to mount further strikes if there were signs Mr Assad was again planning to use chemical weapons.

He accused the United States, France and Britain of "demonstrating a blatant disregard for global law".

"I see desperation. I see cynicism", he said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad described USA -led air strikes against the country as an act of aggression during a meeting with Russian lawmakers Sunday.

Sablin also said Assad accepted an invitation to visit the Siberian region of Khanty-Mansi in Russian Federation.

Mr Assad also declined to comment on calls by the US State Department to declare alleged Syrian stockpiles of chemical weapons, Mr Zheleznyak said.

In a joint operation with the United Kingdom and France, chemical weapons sites, including a storage facility and a research base, were targeted in the pre-dawn hours, constituting the largest military intervention so far since the civil war began.
