It is the latest in a number of unexploded bombs found recently in Germany including one at Berlin's Tegel airport and another in Frankfurt previous year, which led to the evacuation of 65,00 people.

It was found last Wednesday during construction work in Heidestrasse.

Authorities declared an exclusion zone with an 800-metre radius around the site located just north of the central railway station, a transport hub that on a normal day is used by 300,000 passengers.

The 500-kg British bomb was discovered during building work this week, more than seven decades after the end of World War II.

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn said it expected long-distance rail transport at the central station to be disrupted from 10am to 2pm local time (8am to 12pm Irish time).

They posted a video on Twitter showing officers walking up the stairs in an apartment building with the caption: "We're not bringing room service or breakfast in bed but a personal wake-up call".

A Russian-made aerial bomb weighing 100 kilograms was found near a train track leading into Berlin's main station in 2013.

Flights to and from Tegel airport - about 7km away - were not affected by the evacuation.

The discovery of bombs from the second World War is not an uncommon occurrence in Germany with hundreds found ever year.

More than a million of tonnes of bombs landed in Germany during World War II and more than one tenth thought to be unexploded. In September, patients at hospitals in Frankfurt were evacuated to allow the controlled explosion of another huge wartime bomb. The city estimates at least 3,000 bombs, grenades and other munitions are still buried.
