After previous victories in 2015 and 2016, the Kenyan took a ninth career win over 26.2 miles (42.195km), but missed his two-year-old course record. While he could not match the pace set by Kipchoge, who went through the first half at 61:03 on his way to a third London title, Britain's greatest distance runner did rewrite history in conditions reaching 20 degrees. Tadelech Bekele of Ethiopia was third.

Kipchoge, the 2015 and 2016 champion, won with a time of 2:04:17 - 2min 20sec off compatriot Dennis Kimmetto's world record - as unusually high temperatures made running conditions hard in the English capital.

Welshman Jones, who won the London Marathon in 1985, set his British record time of 2:07.13 in Chicago the same year.

The Kenyan, widely considered one of the greatest marathon runners of all time, had been targeting the world record of 2.02.57, but could not sustain a "crazy" early pace.

"The drink station was confusing - I was table four, I went to pick it up".

It is so different to the track. 'I still enjoy the win and I'm happy to be able to win for the third time in London'.

"I gave it 110%".

Farah might have been quicker still but for temperatures of 24C and a problem collecting his drink at the 10km mark which he blamed on staff being too busy taking pictures and led to a lengthy mid-race exchange with motorbike-riding marathon officials. "I was telling the people 'just tell me which one is his drink or my drink, just point to my drink'". "I had to get it right".

Records tumbled in the sweltering heat of the 2018 London Marathon, as Sir Mo Farah, wheelchair athlete David Weir and Mother Nature all made historic contributions to the showpiece event.

"I'm satisfied with the result", added Farah. "I can't do any better than what I did", Farah said. I can't be unhappy with third, looking at the quality of that field you would never have put me there before the race.

In the women's race, it seemed like three-time victor Mary Keitany was headed for a huge win, but she seemed to be struggling in the final seven kilometers of the race with Cheruiyot taking advantage to burst to victory.

While Keitany was beginning to slow, Dibaba came to a halt altogether in the 19th mile after she was passed by Cheruiyot and Kosgei who then had the leader in their sights.

Keitany and Dibaba, who were sportingly sharing drinks in the opening segment, were ahead of Radcliffe's schedule through five kilometres in 15:46 and 10 kilometres in 31:46.
