Defending champion Juventus looked set to open the door for Napoli, which won 1-0 in Turin last weekend to blow the title race wide open, after Inter came from behind at San Siro in a night of huge drama.

The Turin side were facing an embarrassing defeat which would have left the door open for title rivals Napoli until Juan Cuadrado's shot went in off Milan Skriniar with three minutes left and Gonzalo Higuain headed a victor at a stunned San Siro.

Douglas Costa put Juventus ahead after 13 minutes and Inter were in more trouble when their midfielder Matías Vecino was dismissed five minutes later, a decision made with the help of the video assistant referee.

"I have to congratulate the lads, it was an important step towards the Scudetto", said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri. Mauro Icardi equalised shortly after half-time and the veteran Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli turned Ivan Perisic's low cross into his own net.

Juve were facing a dramatic defeat until Cuadrado's shot from an impossible angle deflected in off Skriniar with three minutes left.

That potentially crucial loss at home to their closest foes in the Serie A title race left Juve just a point ahead of Napoli, Kalidou Koulibaly having headed in a dramatic 90th-minute victor.

"It was a attractive night of football between two teams who had to win".

'We didn't stop close to the "Curva" because we were very disappointed and we didn't realise'. But we went to sleep in the dressing-room.

Earlier 10-man Roma warmed-up for next week's must-win Champions League clash with Liverpool by easing to a 4-1 win over struggling Chievo to consolidate third place. "It's upsetting, because the players are not some emotionless robots who only do this for work".

Roma took the lead when Radja Nainggolan crossed to Schick after nine minutes with Dzeko volleying in a second five minutes before the break off a Aleksandar Kolarov centre. Jesus was sent off but Inglese saw his spot kick saved by Alisson.
