Tornado watch issued for central Kansas

First tornado of 2018 in Oklahoma reported Several large tornadoes raked the Plains on Tuesday; another round starts this evening

The city of Wichita and Sedgwick County are not included in the watch, and the main severe weather threat is expected to be north and west of the Wichita area.

Severe storms fired up in parts of Texas, Kansas and Nebraska on Monday evening with almost 20 reports of hail, some the size of golf balls, covering the ground in parts of Nebraska. Confidence is not quite as high for possible severe weather activity Thursday, although storms could form near Emporia and push to the east starting by early afternoon.

Another round of severe weather is possible for Wednesday, but the threat becomes more widespread across northeast Kansas.

The National Weather Service in Grand Forks previous year issued 34 separate tornado warnings and 144 severe thunderstorm warnings in its 35-county coverage area. These threats of medium to large hail, strong wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour and heavy rain largely impact areas in the north central part of the state, stretching east to north of Topeka and well into south central and southeast Nebraska.

The clash of dry air behind the system and moist air ahead of the system are the ingredients for potentially significant severe weather.

On Wednesday, the threat expands and perhaps intensifies greatly.

May is essentially considered the start of severe weather season for Colorado. The weather pattern makes a multi-day severe weather event likely across the middle of the country. An increased risk for severe weather is already being predicted for parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri. Large hail and tornadoes will be the initial threat with a damaging wind and hail threat into the overnight period.

Primary threats include a few tornadoes likely with a couple intense tornadoes possible.

North Dakota recognizes this week as Severe Summer Weather Awareness Week - a reminder that severe weather is not far away. For parts of this region, this is the warmest air mass in almost six or seven months.

Minneapolis reached 80 degrees on Monday, the first time since September. After a cool April morning in the I-95 corridor, temperatures are going to rise into the 70s for most, including New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. For some of this region it will be almost 25 degrees warmer today than it was Monday. In the wake of a frontal system, much of the Midwest and parts of the Northeast are seeing a chilly spring Sunday morning.

Record highs are possible in the Northeast by the end of the week.
