Gov. Reynolds signs 6-week abortion ban into law

Iowa set to ban abortions after six weeks Iowa abortion bill hailed and assailed

If it comes into effect, the law will ban most terminations after six weeks of pregnancy, a move which women's rights groups say will be the country's most restrictive abortion law.

Iowa is the first state to ban abortion after the first sign of a fetal heartbeat.

"I made it clear even in the condition of the state we should never stop fighting on behalf of the unborn", Reynolds said.

The Iowa legislators' attempt to effectively ban abortion is a "blemish" on the state and serves as a reminder that "Iowa's leadership does not value health care", Erin Davison-Rippey, public affairs director of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa, said in a statement.

The law would require any women seeking an abortion to undergo an ultrasound to determine whether a fetal heartbeat can be detected, a milestone usually detected around the sixth week of pregnancy. MS enacted a law earlier this year banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, but it's on hold after a court challenge.

Abortion rights supporters in Iowa and throughout the nation condemned the measure as unconstitutional and an affront to the rights of women.

Any challenges to the law would likely consider if it violates U.S. Supreme Court rulings, including the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. "She has repeatedly proclaimed herself to be "pro-life", Ms Belin said, and in an election year, "I can't imagine her enraging social conservatives by blocking" the bill. For me, my faith leads me to protect every Iowan, no matter how small.

"It dumbfounds me when the opposition states that abortions are safe, legal and rare", she said.

Yes, you read that correctly: In the opinion of Planned Parenthood, prohibiting the killing of human beings will make Iowa unsafe for families. A similar court challenge is under way in Kentucky, which in April enacted a ban on a common abortion procedure from the 11th week of pregnancy.

"However, this is bigger than just a law; this is about life".

"This legislation affirms the scientific fact that human life begins at conception", the American Family Association, a pro-life Christian group in MS, said in a statement.

Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, a Democrat, said Wednesday he is "considering what our responsibility is" in terms of representing the state if the law is challenged. "I stand behind our governor and her support of a bill that will uphold our pro-life values and outlaw this very bad practice of selling fetal body parts".
