Goodall secured a fast-track appointment with the foundation in Basel after he attempted but failed to commit suicide on his own earlier this year. What is sad is if one is prevented.

While increasingly feeble and unable to live as he once did, Goodall is not sick. Swiss law now allows assisted suicide for anyone who acknowledges in writing that they are taking their lives willingly - without being forced.

Goodall was not terminally ill, but his health had deteriorated badly in recent years, according to The New York Times.

Assisted dying is illegal in Australia. except for in the state of Victoria, which in November 2017 voted to legalize euthanasia in some cases.

He travelled to Switzerland to take advantage of the country's assisted-suicide laws. In traveling to Switzerland, he said he hoped his example would lead to debate and give more people the option of physician-assisted suicide.

"My abilities have been in decline over the past year or two, my eyesight over the past six years.I no longer want to continue life".

He was not terminally ill but said he had grown exhausted of living with deteriorating health. The incident gained global media attention, with Goodall, then 102, calling it ageism in the workplace.

"I'm looking forward to it", he said of his imminent death.

Goodall had said that the quality of his life was poor in the past year and that he would be very happy to finally end his life. He fell on his back in the corner of his one-bedroom apartment.

"The procedure for dying can be rather unpleasant, however nevertheless, it shouldn't be" he said.

"That which I would like is to get different states to follow Switzerland's guide and make them facilities available for all clients, should they satisfy certain demands, and also certain requirements perhaps not only of age, but instead of mental capacity".

However, the Australian Medical Association's president, Dr Michael Gannon, says he was concerned that the "suicide of someone who's aged 100" was being celebrated.

"There are many things I would like to do, but it's too late.I'm content to leave them undone".

Lea said Goodall's decision could have a knock-on effect for others contemplating it. "The message I would like to send is: Once one passes the age of 50 or 60, one should be free to decide for oneself, whether one wants to go on living or not".
