Jerusalem Turns into Barracks Ahead of US Embassy Inauguration

Israelis may be anxious but Palestinians in Gaza have actually been killed Gazans rally near Israel border in blockade-busting campaign

The official ceremony for the relocation of the USA embassy in Jerusalem will be held on Monday, May 14 in the Jerusalem district of Arnona, and coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Palestinian people's Nakba, or "catastrophe", which marks the creation of Israel in which 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their land.

Around 15,000 Palestinians took part in the May 11 riots.

Palestinians burned tires to blind the Israeli snipers from shooting protesters, sending flaming kites into Israeli territory.

Hundreds of guests will attend the opening event, including the USA ambassador to Israel, David Friedman; the daughter and son-in-law of the president, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner; Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin; and Jason Greenblatt, the United States special representative for global negotiations.

One Palestinian was killed, hundreds were injured in another day of Return March protests at the Gaza border with Israel, reported the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on the front page of their Saturday edition.

On Thursday in Gaza, Hamas leader Yehya Al-Sinwar described the protests as peaceful, and said: "We hope these incidents will pass without a large number of martyrs and wounded, and the occupation forces must restrain themselves".

Next week the U.S. Embassy in Israel is set to relocate to contested Jerusalem, a move that angered Palestinians who seek the eastern sector of the city for their capital.

At least one demonstrator was martyred and at least 731 others injured - including ten in critical condition - by Israeli troops stationed on the other side of the border, according to Palestinian officials.

Several thousand people are rallying in Jordan to mark the 70th anniversary of what Palestinians call their "nakba", or catastrophe, when hundreds of thousands were uprooted from their homes in the Mideast war over Israel's creation. Some of the protesters, mainly youths, brandished wire cutters, a popular tool in weekly attempts to cut through the border fence.

The statement also follows a policy reversal in the State Department's country report on Israel and the Palestinian Territories, in which it dropped the qualifier "occupied" when referring to the West Bank and Gaza.

Israeli soldiers fired live rounds and volleys of tear gas.

"Israel is a terrorist state, and people supporting it could be considered terrorist sympathisers under the anti-terrorism laws" said Ms Morse.

The Hamas-led demonstrations, fueled by despair in Gaza, are part of a campaign to break the blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt after the Hamas takeover of Gaza in 2007.

Many of Jordan's residents are descendants of Palestinian refugees. Troops were searching for the driver who fled the scene, suspecting it was possibly a Palestinian, as they have used cars as weapons in recent years.
