As of Wednesday, 32 people are suspected to have been infected with Ebola viral disease, including three health care workers.

Addressing journalists on Friday, senior public health officer at the Busia One Stop Border Post (OSBP) Evelyn Walela said apart from checking for temperatures, visitors from Uganda are being asked to answer a brief questionnaire on their movements.

The ministry added, two cases have also been confirmed and nine others are suspected to be from the Ebola virus. "As soon as we have the green light, we'll go for it", he said.

Scientists believe Ebola is most transmitted to people from wild animals like fruit bats, antelope, porcupines, gorillas, and chimpanzees. Around 50 per cent of patients die, according to the WHO.

Ebola is endemic to Congo, a vast central African country whose eastern Ebola river gave the deadly virus its name when it was discovered there in the 1970s.

The province of Equateur covers an area of 130 442 km2 and has an estimated population of 2 543 936 people, it has 16 health zones and 284 health centers.

Pierre Formenty, DVM, MPH, a WHO Ebola expert, told reporters that investigators already know funeral transmission has been an issue in the current outbreak and that anthropology experts, who help navigate cultural issues in outbreak settings, are among the first wave of the surge of WHO experts responding. "There are very few paved roads, very little electrification, very poor water and sanitation...the only way we mount a serious response in this outbreak is through an air-bridge", Mr. Salama said. "It is a dire scene in terms of infrastructure", he said.

Based on lessons learned in past outbreaks, the World Health Organization has already produced some technical materials in the local language and sent them to the area, Salama said. "We are working with our partners to send more staff, equipment and supplies to the area". Without preventive measures, the virus can spread quickly between people through blood, other bodily fluids, and surfaces that have been infected. The formal response team-WHO, Doctors Without Borders and the DRC health ministry-have just arrived in the area, Rollins says, so there are still many unknowns.

World Health Organization is conducting an investigation to see how many people may have come in contact with the infected and is prepared to use a new experimental vaccine if needed, said Fall. There are now no clinical vaccine candidates available that protect against all four human-pathogenic Ebola viruses.

"This is not a simple logistical effort; it's not like doing a polio campaign with oral polio vaccines, where we get it immediately out to the field". "This is a highly complex sophisticated operation in one of the most hard terrains on earth", he said.

This came as Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole said that the Federal Government was taking adequate measures to prevent a possible health disaster in the country owing to the threats posed by the resurgence of Ebola disease in DRC.
