Gap Apologizes for Selling T-shirt with 'Incorrect' Map of China

China calls democratic Taiwan one of its provinces despite nearly seven decades of separate governance. The island was omitted from Gap's latest T-shirt design US retailer Gap apologises for 'erroneous' China map printed on a T-shirt

As the New York Times points out, companies like Delta Air Lines, Marriott, and Zara have also been called out for failing to recognized Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Tibet as sovereign to China, instead referring to them as separate countries.

China, however, has an ax to grind generally-and now specifically because of an image on a T-shirt.

Gap has indeed had to make a full apology to the People's Republic of China after producing and selling a t-shirt with a map of China on it that just so happened to leave off Taiwan and a portion of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh that China claims as 'Southern Tibet'.

It added that the products had been pulled from the Chinese market and destroyed.

Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue.

The losing KMT fled to Taiwan in 1949 after the civil war and China claims the self-ruled island as an inviolable part of its territory.

As an independent and sovereign nation, the people of Taiwan will not be subdued by any threat or intimidation, and any such attempts will only stir resentment from the people of Taiwan toward the Chinese government, he added. According to the Washington Post, it also drew ire for not correctly demarcating China's claimed territory in the South China Sea. In the South China Sea, China is engaged in a number of disputes over islands, coral reefs, and lagoons in what is a major commercial thoroughfare that is potentially rich in resources. The shirt could not be found on Gap websites and it wasn't clear whether it was still being sold in shops in some countries.

The statement continued by saying the company sincerely apologizes for the unintentional error and an internal inspection is being conduct because of the discovery.

A series of other big Western brands have apologized over missteps on Chinese territorial issues.

Delta Air Lines based in the USA and Zara the European based clothing retailer were on the hot seat as well over issues of a similar nature on their e-commerce sites in China.

What do you think of the Gap's apology, PR Daily readers?
